What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the amount of sugar
(glucose) in your blood is too high as the body is not able to
use it properly. Common sources of glucose are through the
digestion of starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes and
from sugar and other sweet foods, and from the liver which
makes glucose.
Insulin is vital for life. It is a hormone produced by the
pancreas, that helps the glucose to enter the cells where it
is used as fuel by the body.
There are two types of diabetes
Type 1
Type 1 diabetes develops when the body cannot produce
insulin at all. Generally this will appear before you are 40
and is the least common accounting for 5 – 15% of diabetes
sufferers.
Type 2
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body makes some insulin
or when the insulin produced is not used properly – known as
insulin resistance. In most cases this is linked with being
overweight. Generally appears in people over 40 but worryingly
children are now being diagnosed with it. According to
Diabetes
UK there are currently over 2 million people with diabetes
in the UK and there are up to another 750,000 people with
diabetes who have the condition and don’t know it.
