Burn 20% to 40% more calories than ordinary walking using Exel Nordic Walking Poles.
Exel poles lead the way in strength and design and come
with a lifetime guarantee.
Fitness for Everyone
Nordic walking as opposed to ordinary walking uses more of your
upper body during fitness walking. This can translate into burning
20% to 40% more calories than ordinary walking at the same speed. In
Nordic Walking you utilise your legs, arms, back of the shoulders,
your chest and back muscles more extensively. In addition, the
technique of Nordic Walking spreads the effort across more of your
body so it can feel easier than ordinary walking.
People of all abilities can walk together, some with poles and
some without so that everyone is walking at the same speed. Nordic
Walking has become so popular that there are many
classes and
groups springing up round the country.
Background
First used as summer training for cross-country skiers the Nordic
Poles and the exercises were further developed in Finland in 1997
through a collaboration between Exel, researchers into sports
medicine, and other fitness professionals. These groups developed
Nordic Walking as a fitness exercise using specially designed poles
to engage the upper body during the walk.
Exel who manufacture the poles have more than 20 years of
experience in Nordic Walking and provide some of the best carbon
composite poles, Exel have also created
educational programming for training techniques, instruction and
warm-up and stretching exercises.
Strengthens the Back and Wrists
Using Exel Nordic Walking poles helps to add strength to the
large muscles in your back. This should reduce tension which can
cause pain and give you a better posture.
Exel Nordic Walking poles have specially designed straps. These
straps allow you to release the grip as you push forward. With good
Nordic Walking technique squeezing and releasing the grip
through the stride strengthens the muscles of the wrist and this can
reduce symptoms of RSI (repetitive stress injury).
Nordic Walking and Heart Rate Monitoring
It’s worth considering using a
Heart
Rate Monitor to measure you heart rate whilst walking. Using a
Heart Rate Monitor will ensure that you are exercising at your best.
You might also be surprised at how hard your heart is working whilst
still feeling relatively comfortable during the exercise. The belief
is that with Nordic Walking, which is a whole body muscular
activity, high heart rate response and yet lowered rate of perceived
exertion (RPE) means you can work at a higher intensity, for longer
and with more ease than in many other types of training techniques -
ideal for beginners and cross-training.

Guide to size of pole to buy:
By far the most important factor when using Nordic Walking poles
is to choose the correct length pole for your height.
The chart below shows you the ideal pole length for you - all
lengths are in both feet and inches and centimetres and the poles
come in 5cm increments.
To calculate the correct pole size, multiple your height (in
centimetres) by 0.68, and then round up or down to the nearest 5cm.
For example:
if your height is 168 cm (5'6") x 0.68 = 114cm then choose 115cm
